Aurora is the phenomenon of collision of highly charged solar wind particles with different elements of the atmosphere, providing the different shades of colors upon the sky. In Europe, the further north one can get, the more likely the chances of aurora will be. Thus, Northern Scandinavia and Iceland are usually the favorite spots for aurora viewers. The best season could be from September to March with clear skies.

Norway

The northern town of Tromso gives good view on aurora borealis activity because its location above the Arctic Circle makes it one of the top places in the world to view shimmering green lights. Svalbard is also in the Arctic Circle, giving a better view of Aurora. The best time to view northern light is in November and February.

Finland

Luosto in Northern Finland has hotels that have alarm systems whenever the northern lights appear. On cloudless nights you can have a glimpse of wavering lights in the skies over the nearby town of Nellim. At Kakslauttanen, you can view aurora from the comfort of your own glass igloo.

Sweden

Abisko in Swedish Lapland is the best place to view aurora due to its unique climatic conditions, which create the blue hole of Abisko a patch of sky that remains clear irrespective of surrounding weather conditions. The village of Jukkasjarvi in Kiruna region has first of its kind ice hotel providing you great northern lights views.

Iceland

Thingvellir National Park is a UNESCO world Heritage Site where you can view the Aurora borealis from almost anywhere in the region. Reykjavik is the most affordable place that provides you with a very good chance of lights in Iceland when the Aurora forecast is good.

Canada

Areas around Lake Superior are good spots for Aurora view. Town of White-house in Yukon Territory extends a great view of glowing skies. Though Canada is a little more expensive, but you can have map of aurora locations to locate the viewing spots.

Scotland

When the skies are clearer on rare occasions, one can have a good chance of viewing Aurora in Northern Scotland. The coast of Caithness in N. Scotland is one of the best places to see the Aurora Borealis.

Ireland

Republic at Malin Head and County Donegal provides great views of Northern lights that extend up to the Inishowen in County Cork in South. You can also view it across the waters in Northern Ireland.

Russia

In Northern Russia, you’ve got a good chance of seeing aurora borealis. The Kola Peninsula along with town of Murmansk is the key areas as they are near to the northern lights viewing zone.

Alaska

Alaska’s location within Northern light zone ensures you the great view. Moving away from city lights to Denali and Yukon will surely enhance your experience. The best time to view them is from September till early April.

Greenland

Greenland is probably the best place to see northern lights where northern lights excursions have a very high success rate. One can see the northern lights from most parts of the country in the dark and clear night sky in a time span from September to the beginning of April.

Denmark

One can have the spectacular view of northern lights at all islands within the Faroe Islands archipelago. One can have the best view of aurora borealis at the remote Norwegian Sea Islands.
